How should I vote?

In this movie a group of friends discuss what they consider to be important when deciding for whom to vote. It is up to you to decide which criteria you take into account and to what extent. Here are some of the issues being debated:

  • How do we balance the personal features of candidates against the policies they and their parties propose?
  • Are we more worried about how well leaders deal with unpredicted situations than everyday policies?
  • Is satisfaction of our personal interests the best reason to vote? Do we also think of the impact of an elected candidate on fellow citizens, on people abroad and on future generations?
  • Are some policies more important for the common good than others?
  • How do we compare candidates and parties based on the positive and negative aspects we associate with them?
  • How much do we care about moral aspects when voting and how do we balance them against our own interests?

After viewing the movie we invite you to think about the questions below.

This discussion is certainly not complete. Perhaps the following issues also play a role in how you vote:

  • How good are your assessments of people and ideologies/policies?
  • How important is trust for you to opt for a candidate or a party?
  • From your past experience, how good were you at figuring out the impact the policies and decisions of elected candidates?
  • How would you describe the common good?
